A breakup of the euro zone has been the political and economic nightmare for European policy makers since Greece's troubles began in the spring of 2010. EU leaders are holding yet another summit this weekend in a bid to keep the euro zone together. Yet given the way the crisis has been mishandled so far, failure can't be ruled out.

Τα παλιά χρόνια τα πράγματα ήταν σχετικώς απλά. Αν κάποιος δεν μπορούσε να αποπληρώσει τα δάνειά του, άρπαζαν τη γυναίκα και τα παιδιά για να τα πουλήσουν στα σκλαβοπάζαρα ώστε να αποπληρωθεί το χρέος. Ή, έστω, έστελναν τις κανονιοφόρους στον Πειραιά και υπαγόρευαν τους όρους αποπληρωμής των δανείων.

A SERIES of tweets yesterday from Chris Hayes, presenter of MSNBC's "Up With Chris Hayes", about the "We are the 99%" rhetoric associated with the Occupy Wall Street movement led me to a perhaps obvious thought I think is nonetheless worth pursuing toward some non-obvious conclusions.

Πολύ λογικά ενήργησε ένας από τους ληστές με τα καλάσνικοφ να κρυφτεί επί μέρες σε σχολείο που βρισκόταν υπό κατάληψη. Πού θα έβρισκε πιο ασφαλές μέρος; Αν και αλβανικής καταγωγής, ο κατηγορούμενος γνώριζε καλά την ελληνική πραγματικότητα. Ηξερε πως μπροστά σε ένα πανό που γράφει «κατάληψη», όλες οι Αρχές του τόπου στέκονται προσοχή. Οι εκπαιδευτικοί δεν κάνουν τίποτε, οι δικαστές κοιτούν αλλού και οι αστυνομικοί δεν μπορούν να παρέμβουν. Ποιο είναι λοιπόν το ασφαλέστερο μέρος για να κρυφτεί κάποιος, παρά ένα σχολείο υπό κατάληψη;

Η αφίσα που κυκλοφόρησε στο Πανεπιστήμιο Αιγαίου ήταν ανατριχιαστική. Μια ομάδα «επαναστατών» από αυτούς που ενδημούν στα ΑΕΙ έβγαλε λίστα προγραφών εκείνων των διδασκόντων που αντιστάθηκαν -ρητορικώς έστω- στην παρανομία τους. «Οταν φοιτητές και εργαζόμενοι», γράφουν, «επιλέγουν τον δρόμο της συλλογικής αντίστασης για μια καλύτερη ζωή, κάποιοι άλλοι (βλέπε παρακάτω) εθελοτυφλούν και επιδιώκουν το προσωπικό τους βόλεμα».

«Να δεχθώ ότι υπάρχουν κάποιοι λίγοι που δεν ασκούν με επιμέλεια τα καθήκοντά τους...», παραδέχθηκε εν τη ρύμη του λόγου πριν από μερικές μέρες σε τηλεοπτικό δίαυλο ο πρόεδρος μιας συνομοσπονδίας εργαζομένων στο Δημόσιο. Το ερώτημα είναι πόσοι ακριβώς είναι αυτοί «οι λίγοι», οι οποίοι κατάφεραν να κάνουν μπάχαλο τη χώρα;

Αν έκανε κάτι καλό το έκτακτο τέλος για τα ακίνητα είναι ότι λειτούργησε σαν ταχύρρυθμο και αναγκαστικό φροντιστήριο δημοσιονομικής επιστήμης. Ολοι συνειδητοποίησαν ότι το Δημόσιο δεν είναι κάτι που χρηματοδοτείται από τον ουρανό. Είναι ο Γαργαντούας που τρέφεται από τις τσέπες μας. Ετσι, ακόμη και οι πιο δύσπιστοι ψευδοκεϋνσιανοί άρχισαν να μιλούν για περιορισμό του κράτους μόλις συνειδητοποίησαν τι θα πληρώσουν για τις ακριβές τους κατοικίες.
