The past few years have been tough ones for the Greek economy and for its tourism industry. As a traveler who has written two guidebooks on Greece, I've felt sure that tourism there would eventually bounce back, but when?
News is good: The Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) announced that it expects a record-breaking 30 million international visitors to Greece for 2017. This represents a growth rate of 7%, or an additional 2 million additional visitors over the previous year. 900,000 U.S. travelers are expected to visit the country this year.

Despite the ongoing migrant and refugee crisis, Greece expects to welcome a record 27 million tourists this year.
“I think it’s an achievement given the fact that we have capital controls, we still have the refugee and migration crisis - which make tourists think twice if they want to visit Lesbos or some other places that are migration hubs,” the government’s top spokesperson Lefteris Kretsos told reporters on Monday.
“Greece is a brand name in tourism. It was always, and I think it will always be,” he added.

BY RENEE MALTEZOU

(Reuters) - Greek tourism revenues should rise 13 percent to
a record 13 billion euros in 2014, the head of the main industry body said on
Tuesday, boosting chances the country will finally emerge from its deep
recession next year.
Tourism is the biggest cash earner for Greece's economy,
accounting for about 17 percent of its 185 billion-euro economic output. It
employs one in five Greeks.

Luring Tourists Back to Greece

The sun was
blazing above the Acropolis, draping the ivory pillars of the Parthenon in a
golden sheen. The red-tiled roof of the ancient Agora museum glimmered in the
heat, and a breeze ruffled the boughs of olive trees. On the rough cobbles of
Plaka, a cafe-lined tourist area, crowds of camera-toting visitors paused to
soak it all in.

I keep
getting asked if Greece
is "safe" for travelers -- a question that feels absurd the instant
you arrive there. Ask anyone who's been to Greece recently, and you'll learn
that safety concerns have been played up by both Greek and international media
outlets.
